The
Metamorphosis of Muteness into Eloquence:
A
Thematic Study of Anita Nair’s Ladies
Coupe
Preface
Anita Nair’s Ladies Coupe is a straight forward and
characteristically brilliant feminist text. The novelist traces the lives of
six women as they travel in the ladies compartment. It is a journey from
innocence to experience. Akhila, the protagonist, and five other women
characters relate their stories and one
realizes that all have suffered at the hands of the repressive forces of
society, revolted against these oppressions and resolved to discover themselves
and establish themselves in society.
This project attempts
to trace the various forms of repression, the different ways and means of
revolt adopted by the female protagonist and her co-passengers and finally, the
resolves they come to as to ‘their’ identity, self definition and place in
society. Akhila learns through her experiences and realizes the futility of
clinging to support systems. She realizes the value of freedom and lives to
cherish it, to do as she wants and not as what others want her to do. There is
bold rejection of society, accommodation and acceptance, withdrawal and a
shrewd tackling of repressive factors. The whole process finally leads one to
an exploration of the dilemma of the new woman who is caught between
traditionalism and modernity. The characters in the novel courageously suggest
new patterns of feminine existence.
